Varicon is on a mission to transform one of the biggest and oldest industries globally.  Construction has one of the highest rates of insolvency among all industries (it accounts for 10% of GDP and 25% of insolvencies).  This is a consequence of the huge level of financial risk that these companies are exposed to. We’re changing this by helping construction contractors make better data-driven decisions to reduce financial risk. 

Varicon is a fast-growing venture funding backed startup transforming the way construction costs are managed. Varicon enables our customers greater visibility into the financial performance of their projects to reduce overall financial risk for the business and improve internal governance processes. 

The Role 

We’re looking for a motivated Product Owner to help us fuel our rapid growth.  This is a unique opportunity to join a high-performance team as one of the early Product Owner hires at the start of our journey. You will be a self-starter, who is comfortable working independently and is confident working in a fast-paced environment, driving product solutions for our customers.

Our Product Owners play a key role in helping us discover, understand, and deliver solutions that will bring value to our customers. Product owners must work closely with product designers and engineers to identify effective solutions, and then deliver those solutions to the market. As Product Owners, we empower clients to solve hard problems – customer problems and business problems – in ways that our customers love, yet work for their business.

You’ll work closely with the Founding team to identify improvements and bottlenecks in our product management processes and be an advocate for data-based decisions and replicable, scalable procedures. There’s the potential to grow into SME or Management roles based on your motivations. 

What you'll be doing

• A product owner is responsible for shaping, designing and building solutions that are valuable (our customers decide to buy or use the product), viable (the solution works within the constraints of the business), usable (the user can use the solution) and feasible (our engineering team can implement them). So the senior product owner is primarily responsible for ensuring the solution is both valuable and viable.
• Develop and maintain trusting relationships with stakeholders in order to collect and prioritize requirements based on business value and impact (also supporting the initial and continuous discussion on how to find business value across products/services),
• You break down the requirements into epics, user stories, acceptance criteria, diagrams, etc.,
• You challenge stakeholders and business owners on the added value of the requirements, always asking 'Why',
• Together with Designers, you refine the wireframes and designs,
• Together with Analytics and Strategy, you discover new opportunities for our clients,
• Once development has started you work with the team as a Product Owner by proxy for our clients,
• Follow our competitors and understand consumer trends to inform future product development.
• As you want to deliver high-quality products, you work closely with QA and participate in the User Acceptance Testing,
• You will be working in (distributed) teams of 4 to 20 resources across Australia, the Philippines and Nepal
• Ability to work independently but also to work closely with a team

What it takes to excel in this role

• A minimum of 1 year experience in a similar role,
• You are a self-starter- who is comfortable working independently
• Excellent written and verbal skills in English,
• Experience with Agile/Scrum software development,
• Excellent communication skills,
• Proven ability to engage with engineers, designers, and company leaders in a constructive and collaborative relationship,
• Flexible and able to handle ambiguity,
• Pragmatic, takes ownership, cool under pressure,
• Demonstrated understanding of the techniques and methods of modern product discovery and product delivery,
• Experience with UX, design and analytics,
• Experience working with project and requirements management systems (JIRA).
